What is Etchash?
Etchash is a modified Dagger-Hashimoto algorithm implemented via ECIP-1099 by Ethereum Classic. It modified epoch lengths to slow DAG growth, allowing 4GB GPUs to continue mining.
While GPUs can still run Etchash, the network hashrate is heavily contested by dedicated Ethash/Etchash ASIC hardware, driving difficulty up and compressing gross profit margins for domestic miners.
Mining Considerations & Competition
Industrial ASIC competition requires careful verification of your marginal electricity cost.
High network difficulty means consumer GPUs require low electricity costs ($<0.08/kWh) to achieve meaningful profitability.
Standard pool fees average 0.5% – 1.0%. Minimum payouts generally range from 0.1 to 0.5 ETC.
